Got a love for Spoken Word?

Poetry is like Therapy, some write their words down in a notebook, just for their eyes to see and others, take it another step further. They release those thoughts out into the universe in hopes that some body, somewhere is listening to their message of concern. T. Miller is a poet, writer and a leader. She speaks volumes and touches on subject matters that will leave you thinking deep thoughts. She is one of my favorite poets and if you're interested in hearing some dope poetry this weekend, than check out the Neo Minds Poetry and Slam Series this Friday at the 5 E. Gallery in downtown Detroit. Don't just take my word for it, T. Miller is truly amazing, but why don't you come and see it for yourself.

This Friday come out and see our International legend T. Miller rock out at Neo Minds Poetry and Slam Series. Known for being ranked as high as 5th and 3rd women poets in the nation and for her sprite slam dunk competition commercial just last year, she promises to penetrate your heart and mind with powerful messages.

Also this week: another Qualifier round for the Detroit poetry slam team. Come watch as poets go for blood and leave it all on the floor as they attempt to advance to the next level in gaining a spot on the 2011 Detroit poetry slam team.

Place: 5 E Gallery 2661 Michigan ave (btwn 19th and 20th) near downtown
Time: doors open at 8:30
Cost: only $10.00

We are also asking for non-monetary donations for families and homeless individuals that are very much in need.

Eric Roberson coming to Detroit!

If you don't know, now you know! I'm a huge Eric Roberson fan, and guess what ladies and gent's? He will be in the "D" February 5th at the Charles H. Wright Museum. When I got the email from Urban Organic about Eric Roberson coming to town, I almost flipped out of my seat! This man right here! has an amazing talent, and when he performs the energy that he gives off in the room, is almost mesmerizing. His music truly speaks to any aspect of a person life, and if you haven't seen him live yet, here's your opportunity to see him perform.

But what is going to set this night off, is when Kristopher Lamont hit's the stage and opens for Eric Roberson. I wrote a featured article on Kristopher Lamont a little under a month ago, on voice is word and that article was featured in the Michigan Front Page. Kristopher is destined for greatness, and if you haven't already checked out my article on Kris do so right now! Or you can read more about the up and coming artist at kristopherlamont.com. To purchase advance tickets to this event, go to howarduniv-ericroberson.eventbrite.com

Voice is word will defiantly be in the house, hope to see you there!

Liv Warfield Decided

Ok ya'll, Liv Warfield is a dynamic singer! I am so waiting to see her perform live here in Detroit. When I heard this song on the Michael Basiden show some time ago, I immediately went looking for album. When she sings, she gives off so much energy through her music, and that right there alone is a plus for me. She sings with such emotion and you feel all of her songs. If you're not familiar with who she is, I hope by watching this video you'll do exactly what I did, and went out and purchased her album.

I'm a fan of all music especially music that has substance, and this song "Decided" is full of all of that. Not sure? Click the play button and hear it for yourself! Tell me your thoughts and what you think of the artist and this video as well.

Peace,
Temeka Carmel

DJ L Boog Music Makes You Loose Control!

Detroit is fueled by music, so much so, that when you get in your car and turn on your radio and hear a hype song, you instantly go from 55 miles per hour to 80, in under 10 seconds flat. Feel good music is the best music and when you’re ready to get loose and shake what ya mama gave ya, you head down to the hottest club, where the DJ is sensationally dope and keeps the crowd jumping until the last call. DJ L Boog does just that, and I had the opportunity to sit down with him to find out what set’s him apart from all the other DJ’s in the “D”. Larry, who goes by the name DJ L Boog, isn’t just your stand still; sit behind the turn table’s kind of guy. His passion and love for music and desire for people to have a good time, is what keeps his crowd hype, up out of their seats and on their feet.

Douglas H. Everett once said “There are some people, who live in a dream world, and there are some face reality; a then there are those who turn one into the other.” DJ L Boog sought after his dream of deejaying and turned it into his now, phenomenal reality. Before DJ L Boog evolved into the DJ that he is today, his now vision was inspired by his middle school teacher. He told me that everything that they did in his teachers class was catered to music an arts, and one day his teacher brought some turn table’s into the classroom and DJ L Boog instantly went “wow, turntables, what is this?” Once his teacher showed him how to mix and blend on those turntables, he had no idea how much Deejaying would become apart of his future. Because his parents wouldn’t purchase him turntables of his own, he was fortune enough to have someone be married into his family who was a DJ from New York and allowed him to use his equipment to practice on, and from that moment on, his fascination of turntables turned into his hobby and grew into what he loves to do most full time.

His first gig came at a coincidence; he was doing security at the Black Well center in Highland Park, where they gave high school parties for the young teenagers. At that time they were having issues with their DJ and they were in need of another one. DJ L Boog’s told his aunt who had a contract at the Blackwell center that he deejayed and she decided to give him a shot. That one shot landed him a six month gig deejaying for the local high school parties at the Black Well center.

When asked what sets him apart from all the other DJ’s in Detroit, he told me that it was his energy and his interaction with the crowd. Since he DJ’s every Thursday night at Ignite inside of MGM on ballroom night, he’s able to interact more with the crowd, and he’s able to get out on the floor and ballroom and hustle with the crowd. But what truly set’s DJ.L. Boog apart from all the other DJ’s in Detroit is him being nominated and winning best DJ, by the Detroit Young Professional’s. To receive recognition from your peers and friends for something you love to do is an amazing thing, but to receive an award for your talent means somebody is truly paying attention. DJ L. Boog was surprised when he found out that he was even nominated and when he won, it was such a humbling experience. This opportunity has open even more doors for the talented DJ, so much so, that in 5 years he see’s him self going global. He doesn’t just want to be known as a local Detroit DJ, but he also wants to be known worldwide. DJ L Boog, wants’ to be able to inspire other people to do what they love to do as well and seek out their dreams and passions.

Lot’s of people look at DJ’s as someone who just spins records, but it’s much more to it, than that. In order to be the best you have to ensure that you stay ten steps ahead of the game and just like anything else; DJ’s have to study and practice their craft too. However, you may look at it; DJ’s have to study & research new music and new artist. It can become an grueling process at times however, it takes time and preparations to be able to play what’s hot now, all the while keeping them informed on music that hasn’t even been played on the radio yet.

You never have to worry about DJ L. Boog not being up on the latest and the greatest jams, and if you’re not quite sure if you believe me? Check out DJ L. Boog three nights a week at MGM Grand Detroit at U, Me, Drink and at Ignite on Thursdays on ball rooming night. Trust me; I’ve had the opportunity to hear DJ.L Boog at U, Me, Drink on a Saturday night and each and every time I was their, I very pleased with the music being played throughout the lounge. Even though U, Me, Drink is a classified as a lounge, people are never afraid to get up and get their ballroom hustle on or drop it low one time.

If you love music like I love music DJ L. Boog even has a podcast where he has samples of his mixes available for you to hear. Simply go to http://djlboog.podomatic.com/ and if that’s not enough for you, you can follow him on twitter at twitter.com/boogsworld, and find him on facebook at facebook.com/djlboog or check him out on his blog djlboog.blogspot.com.

If I were to describe DJ L Boog I would say he is inspired, energetic, transcending, one of kind, talented and humbling man. Everybody has a voice and a story to tell and sometimes that voice can be heard coming from the turntables of the livest DJ, mixing and spinning the hottest songs in town. DJ L. Boog is defiantly a voice to be heard and the next time you’re looking to unwind and leave all your weekday woos behind, be sure to check out Detroit’s Best DJ, DJ L Boog.
